Yoshimitsu Uemura

Professor Yoshimitsu Uemura is Professor and Mitsubishi Chair in Green Technology of Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP). He graduated from Tokyo Institute of Technology (TIT), Japan, in 1977, and finished his master at TIT in 1979. He was awarded PhD degree from TIT in 1990. He joined Mitsui Chemicals in 1979, and then moved to Kagoshima University in 1984. He had been a faculty member of Kagoshima University for 23 years. His research field includes catalytic reaction engineering, reactor engineering and polymer engineering, and their application to biomass conversion and energy & environmental issues. He joined UTP in 2009, and established the Center for Biofuel and Biochemical Research (CBBR) at UTP in May 2010. Since then he has been working with biomass utilization as the Head of the Center. Now the Center has the status of UTP-Center of Excellence.

Dr. Mika Aalto is a Head of Division at the Finnish Ministry of Employment and the Economy, in its Enterprise and Innovation Department. The Division, Strategic Growth Branches, develops and operates national programs within areas identified most potential for growth of Finnish companies. The current programs include the Strategic Program for the Forest Sector, Strategic Program for Cleantech, Strategic program for health and well-being, as well as the Sustainable Mining Industry Program and the Travel and Tourism spearhead program. Before joining the Ministry, Dr. Aalto worked for more than 15 years at Tekes, the Finnish Funding Agency for Technology and Innovation. He worked in various positions, e.g. as a Senior Technology Advisor, Program Manager, Director of Material and Process Techologies, as well as Director of Forest and Chemical Industries. He worked at Tekes Silicon Valley office in California in 2002–2004 and as a visiting researcher at University of California at Berkeley in 1995–1996. He holds a Doctor of Technology degree in Chemical Technology from Helsinki University of Technology (currently, Aalto University).

Dr. Sanna Taskila is a post-doctoral research fellow and leader of the Bioprocess Engineering team in the Chemical Process Engineering group, and a PI in the Bioeconomy Research Community Oulu, University of Oulu. Taskila has studied industrial side streams and their valorization in various projects, focusing on enzymatic conversion technologies. In an earlier project financed by ERDF Taskila and her colleagues developed an energy and material efficient process for the separation of active proteins from potato fruit juice. Currently she is the responsible leader in Finnish Innovation Agency TEKES financed project for the commercialization of this process. Aside her academic career, Dr. Taskila has also worked as a bioprocess consultant for WSP Finland Oy in bioeconomy development projects.

Dr. Maija Pohjakallio works as an advisor in the Chemical Industry Federation of Finland where she focuses on issues related to bioeconomy and cleantech. In 2013 she conducted a study Bioeconomy and Chemical Industry in Finland, and participates now actively in many projects aiming at the development of bioeconomy in Finland and in the EU. She is an external expert in the EU Bioeconomy Panel Market Making working group and acts as a secretary in the bioeconomy group within the national Federation. Maija Pohjakallio received her doctorate degree in 1996 from Helsinki University of Technology majoring in Physical chemistry and electrochemistry (minor in applied physics). Before her current work she was involved in teaching, academic research and consultancy.

Dr Jukka Heikki Ahtiainen is a senior research scientist at the Finnish Safety and Chemicals Agency (Tukes) which is the main Competent Authority for Chemicals Safety covering REACH and CLP, biocides, and pesticides. He is a specialist in (eco) toxicology and environmental fate of chemicals and has been National Coordinator of the OECD test guidelines for chemicals and EU Test Method Regulation since 1995. He has been an external expert for developing the opinion on nanomaterial safety 2009 in EU Commission's Scientific Committee of Emerging and Newly Identified Health Risks (SCENIHR). He is also Head of delegation to the OECD WPMN on nanomaterial safety, and there a member of SG3, SG4 (the section lead on environmental fate) and SG6 for risk assessment. He is participating in EU competent authority group for REACH and CLP (CARACAL) subgroup nano and in the ECHA WG on nanomaterials and currently acting as National Coordinator in EU NANoREG research project.

Affiliated companies serve E- and E-H2-mobility, entertain a ZEV-Auto-Fleet, maintain buildings and operate a public technology center and student’s dormitories, a tour operator as well as sailing and aircraft operations. Zoz Energy is active since 2010 and today operates seven photovoltaic fields and holds about 12 hectares land for the construction of wind turbines. Assigned are a PEM fuel cell plant in Siegen ZCS for electricity and heat supply (hydrogen reforming from city gas) and an electrolysis plant at ZTC in Olpe to supply hydrogen for vehicle operation on success of the Zoz-ZEV fleet.

She has an extensive experience of technology transfer and communication on an executive management level, both in public and private organizations. Åsalie Hartmanis holds a Master’s degree in biochemical engineering from the Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden. Prior to SwedNanoTech, she was Director of Communications of the Swedish Plastics & Chemicals Federation. She led different large public relation projects and was also in the Strategy Implementation Group for Stakeholder Engagement at CEFIC in Brussels. Before that, she was editor-in-chief for Kemisk Tidskrift/Kemivärlden, the main business-to-business magazine for chemical industry in Sweden.

Andreas Jazdanian received a Diplom in Materials Science from the University of Heidelberg, Germany and a Ph.D. from the School of Engineering at the University of Illinois, USA in 1997. In the U.S. He was employed in engineering consulting in the practice areas of civil and environmental engineering. In 2005 he joined the Chicago-based U.S. subsidiary of Toda Kogyo Corporation, a Japanese manufacturer of electronic materials, as a manager for business development. He was a manager for business development of battery materials for the Chemische Fabrik Budenheim in Germany. Since 2012 he is a Business Development Director at Ilika Technologies Ltd., a company based in the United Kingdom, working from his home office in Germany.

He has previously done presentations around filtration at the Nordic chapter of Filtration society both at Lappeenranta University of Technology and at Chalmers Gothenburg. Job|filtration works world-wide in liquid/solid separation with a main focus on traditional Swedish and Finnish type of industry as mining, pulp and paper etc.

Johan Sjöblom is professor in surface and colloid chemistry and the head of the Ugelstad laboratory at the Norwegian University of Technology and Sciences (NTNU) in Trondheim, Norway from the beginning of 2002. He was earlier professor at the University of Bergen during the years 1988–1999, and chief researcher at Statoils R&D Centre in the period 1998–2001. Sjöblom has served as Adjunct professor of Colloid chemistry and Materials science at Clarkson University, Potsdam, New York and at the Technical University of Helsinki from 1992–1999. Sjöblom is the editor of 9 books and the author or coauthor of more than 300 professional papers. He has educated 40 PhD:s and 40 MSc:s. Sjöblom has been an industrial consultant in colloid chemistry since 1980. Professor Johan Sjöblom is the recipient of Statoils Research Award 2006.

Ilkka Turunen, Professor of Process Systems Engineering at Lappeenranta University of Technology, obtained his Dr. Tech. degree in Helsinki University of Technology in 1985. After that he was employed by Kemira Oy Oulu Research Centre years 1985–1999. At Kemira Turunen was involved e.g. in the development of Kemira’s novel processes for production of hydrogen peroxide and melamine. In these fields he was a co-inventor in about 20 patents. He was also granted an award (honorable mention) of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Chemical Industry Federation, Finland, for achievements in the development of hydrogen peroxide technology, 18.11.1997. At 1999 was nominated as a professor in Lappeenranta University of Technology. His main research interests include process intensification, microprocess technology and development of multiphase chemical reactors. He has about 160 scientific publications in chemical engineering and related fields. Turunen is a member (former chairman) of the Working Party of Process Intensification and of a Working Party of Education in European Federation of Chemical Engineering.

Her research and education deals with the use of catalytic materials in the conversion of biomass to valuables and in the catalytic treatment of industrial wastewaters. Preparation, characterization and electrochemical testing of lithium-ion battery chemicals are also research topics of the research group. Professor Lassi has authored or co-authored over 200 publications in international scientific journals, other scientific papers, monographs, abstracts and other publications.

Dr. Selkälä has sixteen years experience in the field of organic chemistry and eleven years of the experience is obtained in fine chemical industry research and development. Dr. Selkälä has experience of tens of projects and several of the projects have been implemented and realized at industrial production scale. Dr. Selkälä has filed several invention notifications for CABB.

Kari Herlevi is currently responsible for the Resource efficient economy area in Tekes. Kari leads the Green Growth – Towards a Sustainable Future -program which aims to identify potential new growth areas for the sustainable economy business, which are essentially based on lower energy consumption and sustainable use of natural resources. The program’s focus areas are energy and material efficient products and services, bioeconomy and biomaterials, recycling, recovery of raw materials, waste treatment, business models, service concepts and comprehensive solutions. The program will support the generation of new innovations especially on boundaries between sectors, as future sustainable economy solutions will not be defined by traditional sectoral divisions. Before that Kari lead the Vigo accelerator program in Tekes and supported Tekes management. Kari has also worked in Tekes Silicon Valley office for couple of years and his special interest is fast growing cleantech firms and developing countries like BRIC.

Dr. Joachim Karthäuser is chairman and CTO at SiOx Machines AB. He is Ph.D. in physical chemistry (1989) in Göttingen University, Germany. His industrial career begins at Shell Chemicals Research Center in Amsterdam 1990. He has been operating at Shell Chemicals Europe as Technical Manager Higher Olefins in UK and as Sales Manager for Shell Norden. He was appointed to NKT Denmarks R&D Director in 2000. Since 2004 he has been General Manager for AGA/Linde Gas, High Pressure Gas Applications. He is Co-Founder of SiOx Machines AB, 2007 (supercritical / liquid CO2 technology) and Climeon AB, 2011 (heat-to-electricity). He also holds the position as Technical Director Composites and Board Member at Re-Turn AS, Norway.

Mike Tomkin graduated from The National Leathersellers College, London, in 1973. After working in a number of UK tanneries, he joined the Leather Chemicals division of Rohm and Haas in USA where he worked for four years before returning to Europe with them for a further seven years. In 1992, he joined Connolly Leather in London before moving on to Stahl in Holland a year later. After working in product development for Stahl, he ran their Automotive Leather Chemicals division for a number of years and moved into his current role, Director of Sustainability, in 2012.

Dipl.-Chem. Dr. Andreas Dietz, born 1958, studied Chemistry at the University in Hamburg and made his PhD in Electrochemistry. Since 1993 he is employed at Fraunhofer Institute of Surface Technology and Thin Films in Braunschweig, Germany, where he founded the working group “Electroplating”. He is manager of the group. The topics:

  • Development of the electrodeposition of composites
  • Metallization of light metals like aluminum, magnesium or titanium
  • Coating of parts for special applications in aerospace
  • New, environmental friendly processes of plastic metallization
  • Electrodeposition of metals from ionic liquids

Jyrki Saarinen is Professor on Photonics Applications and Commercialization in the Institute of Photonics at University of Eastern Finland (UEF), and Adjunct Professor of Micro-Optics at Aalto University. After childhood and youth in Kokkola, he moved to Helsinki, where he received his D.Sc. (Tech.) degree from Helsinki University of Technology (TKK) and MBA from TKK Executive School of Business. In the past 15 years, as Co-Founder, Senior VP, and Member of the Board he was the driving force behind Heptagon's growth to the world-leader in advanced micro-optics with over one thousand employees and operations in Singapore, Switzerland, and Silicon Valley. The last seven years, before taking his position at UEF, he lived in Silicon Valley. He is Member of the Advisory Board of US Market Access Center, Silicon Valley; Executive Director at European Optical Society; Vice Chairman at Finnish Physical Society; and Member of the Board at Photonics Finland.

Johan von Knorring, born in 1954 in Finland, is founder and chairman of the board of Ab Nanol Technologies Oy since March 2011. Prior to this he has held several senior management positions within the chemical and petrochemical industry, such as Kemira, Neste and Borealis. He was CEO of Bang & Bonsomer Group between 2005 and 2010. During more than 14 years of international assignments with Borealis, he has gained a wide experience spanning from sales and marketing management to business and technology operations. He also has a solid international experience in the field of acquisitions and integration of business portfolios, manufacturing assets, and research and technology activities. During his engagement with FIM Corporate Finance Oy (2003–2005) and Merasco Capital Ltd. (2010–) he has been involved in several M&A projects. Johan von Knorring holds a M.Sc. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Åbo Akademi and he has carried out post-graduate studies in Finland (Åbo Akademi), in Belgium (University of Leuven), in the US (Babson College, Boston), in Switzerland (IMD, Geneva) and France (Insead, Fontainebleau).

Aleksey Zolotukhin

Dr. Aleksey Zolotukhin is a R&D scientist in Picodeon LTD Oy, Finnish Thin Film Coating Specialist. Aleksey received his MSc in 2003 and PhD in 2007 in Physics from Lomonosov Moscow State University. He was a postdoctoral and later a project researcher at University of Eastern Finland (UEF) for 6 years before taking his position in Picodeon. His professional expertise includes Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD), Pulsed Laser Ablation (PLD), carbon nanomaterials, as well as other functional coatings. In particular, he focuses on coating parameters optimization, process plasma diagnostics, as well as on a wide range of materials characterization techniques. Dr. Aleksey Zolotukhin has published over 60 papers including peer-reviewed scientific journals and conference proceedings. His recent research activity concerns development of novel coating solutions and applications in tribology, optics, and electronics.

James Woodcock is a Project Manager with extensive experience both in the UK and internationally, working with funders and delivery partners to develop and deliver facilitated industrial symbiosis programmes. In Finland he has been working with SITRA and Motiva to develop industrial symbiosis activities. He has extensive environmental and industrial knowledge gained from over 20 years in roles that crossed industry boundaries. With seven years international working experience, James currently manages and delivers Industrial Symbiosis programmes in a number of countries including Belgium, China, Finland, Hungary, The Netherlands, South Africa and Turkey. Previous projects have also included Brazil, Poland, Romania and Slovakia. His responsibilities include project management and delivery to pre-defined targets, training of new and complex concepts to various audiences (including non-English speaking audiences working with translators), and support of project delivery to in-country teams. James joined International Synergies after having worked in the water industry for 15 years where he was responsible for granting and enforcing trade effluent consents to industry, in addition to charging and debt management of business customers.

Paula Eskola, M.Sc. (tech.), has worked for 6 years in Motiva as an expert in the field of resource efficiency of products and manufacturing. Motiva is a state owned non-partial expert organization promoting efficient and sustainable use of energy and materials in Finland. In Motiva she is responsible for the development and implementation of the Finnish Industrial Symbiosis System (FISS) which is a systematic model for promoting industrial symbiosis on a regional and national level. She has also been responsible for the development of material efficiency audit tools for industry. Prior to this position she worked for 11 years as a research scientist at VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland. Her expertise fields are: material efficiency, industrial symbiosis, environmental effects of material flows and life cycle assessment.
